Description

Calling all Jack Russell Terrier lovers!

Are you looking for a true, full-of-energy JRT?

Meet Akira – The Playful Adventure-Seeker!

Akira is a spirited 4-year-old Jack Russell Terrier who’s ready to bounce her way into your heart!
Weighing just 15 lbs, this pint-sized bundle of energy is the perfect companion for an active family. True to her breed, Akira is incredibly smart, curious, and always on the lookout for her next adventure.

She absolutely loves playing ball, go for walks and playing with her toys.

Akira is good with older kids that know how to interact with dogs. She enjoys the company of other dogs, as she has lived with her mom for 4 years, though she prefers slow introductions to new furry friends.

Potty-trained and used to apartment life, Akira is comfortable using potty pads, but she is very smart so we are sure she won't have any issues leraning a new portty routine. She is also spayed and up to date on shots.

Akira would thrive in a home that offers plenty of physical and mental stimulation. Her ideal family is one familiar with Jack Russells or similar breeds who can give her the activity, stimulation, structure, and love she needs to stay happy.

Akira’s loving nature and adventurous spirit make her an amazing addition to the right family. She is loves car rides and due to her size, she is the perfect companion for going literally anywhere!

Are you ready to be her forever companion?

Learn more about our adoption process below and fill out an adoption application to take the first step in giving Akira (and Aisha!) the home they deserve!

  1. Meet the Adoption Criteria. Before you do anything else, make sure you meet our adoption criteria. You must be at least 21 years old. You must live within a 60-mile radius of Richardson, Texas. You must share veterinary records for all pets currently in your home and all pets owned in the last five years. All pets in the home must be spayed or neutered. If you rent your home, you must provide verification that pets are allowed on the property. You must be willing to be interviewed by an adoption counselor and you must undergo a home visit from an RHS representative.

  2. Apply. You can complete an application at an MTP event or complete it online by either clicking the button below or the “Adopt” button beneath the pet’s photo in the listings above.

  3. Phone Interview or Attend a Meet the Pets (MTP) event. This is a great opportunity to meet the pet you are interested in and see if you connect. We hold these events once a month on Saturday from 1:00-3:00 p.m. We post the pets who are expected to attend on Friday evening on our Facebook page. For exact details and locations, view our event calendar. If an event is over a week away, a counselor may contact you for a phone interview.

  4. Home Visit. If all the steps above are completed satisfactorily, we will set up a home visit where you can meet the pet you are interested in again and the pet can meet other pets in the family. We will try to send the foster parent so you can learn more about how the pet is in a home environment.

  5. Complete Adoption. If all feel it is a good match, we will schedule the adoption at MTP or an off-site location. The applicant will need to complete the adoption contract and pay the adoption fee. Our adoption fee is $250 for adult dogs, $300 for puppies (under 1 year) and $135 for cats. Discounts are available for senior-aged pets.

Adoption fees are payable in cash, PayPal, Venmo or by check to RHS.

Shelter location

We don't have a physical shelter - all the pets are fostered by our volunteers in their homes. Please visit our events page to see the next Meet the Pets event at https://www.richardsonhumanesociety.org/events/

    Breed info

The Jack Russell Terrier is a small terrier that has its origins in fox hunting in England. It is principally white-bodied and smooth, rough or broken-coated and can be any colour. Small tan and white terriers that technically belong to other breeds are sometimes known erroneously as "Jack Russells". Each breed has different physical characteristics according to the standards of their national breed clubs; size and proportions are often used to tell them apart. Some authorities recognize a similar but separate breed as the Russell Terrier – a shorter-legged, stockier dog, with a range of 20–30 cm (8–12 in)[citation needed]. However, the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) regards the Russell terrier as a sub-type of Jack Russell terrier. Jack Russells are also frequently confused with the Parson Russell Terrier. Technically, the Parson Russell is usually larger and officially limited to a middle range, with a standard size of 30–36 cm (12–14 in),[citation needed] whereas the Jack Russell is a broader type, with a size range of 25–38 cm (10–15 in)[citation needed] Jack Russells are an energetic breed that rely on a high level of exercise and stimulation. They are relatively free from any serious health complaints. Originating from dogs bred and used by the Reverend John Russell in the early 19th century, from whom the breed takes its name, the Jack Russell has similar origins to the modern Fox Terrier. It has gone through several changes over the years, corresponding to different use and breed standards set by kennel clubs. Recognition by kennel clubs for the Jack Russell breed has been opposed by the breed's parent societies – which resulted in the breeding and recognition of the Parson Russell terrier. Jack Russells have appeared many times in film, television, and print – with several historical dogs of note.
