Banjo, affectionately known as "Sniffer," is an inquisitive and thoughtful explorer who delights in taking in the world around him. Whether he's strolling along on a walk or casually meandering through his environment, Banjo is always absorbed in "reading the doggie newspaper," sniffing out every detail and scent his surroundings have to offer. His curiosity is endless, making every day an adventure.

Banjo is no stranger to playtime, enjoying games of tug-of-war and chasing big plastic balls—especially when you’re involved! But one of his greatest joys is simply sitting on a bench or rock, watching the world go by while soaking up some gentle back and neck scratches. And not to mention, he’s smart as a whip; a quick learner who loves to please!

He’s a gem who will be your loving, curious companion through both adventures and quiet moments.  If this sounds like your kind of boy, Banjo is the perfect match!

Before you can adopt, please complete an adoption application on our website at pawscrossedny.org/dog-adoption-application! Once your application is approved, you will be able to call to schedule an appointment. If you have any questions, please email us at [email protected] for more information. Please understand that we cannot hold any pets. All adoptions are done on a first come, first adopt basis for approved applicants.

The Shelter software system requires that we choose a predominant breed or breed mix for our dogs. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable so for most of our dogs we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We encourage you to select your new companion by considering each dog's individual personality and pet qualities instead of relying on a breed label that is only a guess.

Adoption process

Simply fill out a questionnaire and we will get back to you within a few days. Please feel free to come by and visit our Rescue while we process your questionnaire!

Please note that we do not hold pets for any reason. We have a first come, first adopt policy for applicants with pre-approved questionnaires.

You can come by the Rescue anytime during our open hours to meet our pets or fill out the questionnaire (available online as well). Please feel free to call or email us for more information on the process or a specific pet you're interested in!

    The Labrador Retriever, often abbreviated to Labrador, is a breed of retriever-gun dog from the United Kingdom that was developed from imported Canadian fishing dogs. The Labrador is one of the most popular dog breeds in a number of countries in the world, particularly in the Western world. A popular disability assistance breed in many countries, Labradors are frequently trained to aid those with blindness or autism, act as a therapy dog, or perform screening and detection work for law enforcement and other official agencies. The breed is best known for their obedience, loyalty, and playful composure. Additionally, they are prized as sporting and hunting dogs. Ancestors include a breed used in Newfoundland as fishing dogs, that would help in bringing in the fishing nets and recapture escaped fish. In the 1830s, the 10th Earl of Home and his nephews the 5th Duke of Buccleuch and Lord John Scott, had imported progenitors of the breed from Newfoundland to Europe for use as gundogs. Another early advocate of these Newfoundland fishing dogs was the 2nd Earl of Malmesbury, who bred them for their expertise in waterfowling. During the 1880s, the 3rd Earl of Malmesbury, the 6th Duke of Buccleuch, and the 12th Earl of Home collaborated to develop and establish the Labrador Retriever breed. The dogs Buccleuch Avon and Buccleuch Ned, given by Malmesbury to Buccleuch, were mated with bitches carrying blood from those originally imported by the 5th Duke and the 10th Earl of Home. The offspring are the ancestors of all modern Labradors.
