Description

~Adoptable Toucan Dan ~

Handsome Dan is a spunky, adorable, sweet, energetic, one year old boy who loves to cuddle!

Dan was adopted from our rescue in May at about 3 months old when no concerning behaviors were observed. Dan was surrendered back to rescue when he was about 6 months old for play and biting that was escalating to a point of being more intense than typical puppy behavior. Dan’s family noticed the behaviors escalate after sending Dan to a board and train program that used aversive training methods. Even several months later, poor Dan will still occasionally flinch with approached quickly/touched in the neck area.

When Dan was returned to rescue, we wanted to ensure that we were setting him up for success. Dan has been seen by a behavioral veterinarian and has been on fluoxetine for the past 5 months. We have been ensuring that he gets daily mental and physical stimulation. Dan has also been neutered while with us. Dan has been back with us in rescue for 6 months and we have not seen any concerning behaviors. He has been with 3 different foster families and has really thrived in his latest foster home, with foster mom sharing that “he is the easiest foster she’s had yet!”

Dan is crate trained, and potty trained and loves meeting new people and animals. He is the first to greet people when they enter his foster home and wants to greet everyone when he goes on walks. Dan is doing well walking on a leash, but since it’s exciting to make new friends, he is still learning to walk without pulling. He loves other dogs so much, that sometimes his playfulness can be a little too much and “annoying” to older dogs or dogs who are not as playful.

A similar sized dog who is playful or a home by himself would be best. Dan loves playing in the fenced in yard, but also enjoys going for walks and for car rides, so would love an adopter who enjoys being outside and who would like an errand buddy! Young children can be overstimulating for many dogs because of their fast movements and often higher volume levels so we think a home with children ages 12 and up would be best for Dan.

“Toucan Dan” deserves the best. He is truly a rescue favorite and has thrived over the past 6 months. If you think this handsome, smart, cuddly boy would make a great sidekick for you, please complete the application below. Dan is up to date on vaccines, microchipped and neutered for an adoption fee of $375.

Adoption process

Applications are submitted and reviewed by volunteers. The vet listed as well as personal references are contacted before a home check is scheduled. Breed info

The Labrador Retriever, often abbreviated to Labrador, is a breed of retriever-gun dog from the United Kingdom that was developed from imported Canadian fishing dogs. The Labrador is one of the most popular dog breeds in a number of countries in the world, particularly in the Western world. A popular disability assistance breed in many countries, Labradors are frequently trained to aid those with blindness or autism, act as a therapy dog, or perform screening and detection work for law enforcement and other official agencies. The breed is best known for their obedience, loyalty, and playful composure. Additionally, they are prized as sporting and hunting dogs. Ancestors include a breed used in Newfoundland as fishing dogs, that would help in bringing in the fishing nets and recapture escaped fish. In the 1830s, the 10th Earl of Home and his nephews the 5th Duke of Buccleuch and Lord John Scott, had imported progenitors of the breed from Newfoundland to Europe for use as gundogs. Another early advocate of these Newfoundland fishing dogs was the 2nd Earl of Malmesbury, who bred them for their expertise in waterfowling. During the 1880s, the 3rd Earl of Malmesbury, the 6th Duke of Buccleuch, and the 12th Earl of Home collaborated to develop and establish the Labrador Retriever breed. The dogs Buccleuch Avon and Buccleuch Ned, given by Malmesbury to Buccleuch, were mated with bitches carrying blood from those originally imported by the 5th Duke and the 10th Earl of Home. The offspring are the ancestors of all modern Labradors.
